Lesson 32

When Ser and Estar Change the Meaning

Language Transfer Complete Spanish is by Mihalis Eleftheriou. Listen to the original audio first; use these notes for revision.

Some adjectives change meaning depending on whether you pair them with ser or estar. This is where the state vs characteristic distinction really shines:

Aburrido: Es aburrido = He's boring (characteristic). Está aburrido = He's bored (state).

De = from / of. This de- prefix appears in many English words: deliver = de (from) + liver (related to liberación = freedom). Liberar = to liberate. Libre = free.

Another etymology gem: "decipher" = de (from) + cipher (from Arabic "sifr" = zero). Ocupado = busy/occupied. Preocupado = worried ("pre-occupied").
